Bernie Ecclestone volunteered to consult Todt, who had not come to the meeting, and the president of the FIA, Max Mosley , who was not present at the race, and reconvene the meeting when he had responses.

Ecclestone returned at about By the time Stoddart's account of the meeting was published, Todt had already denied that he had ever been consulted, but stated that, if asked, he would not have agreed to the chicane.

Stoddart was then approached by a Bridgestone representative and told that Bridgestone wanted him to race; he has also stated that given his "current relationship with Mr Mosley, [he] felt certain heavy sanctions would follow if [he] did not [race].

At the start of the race, all the cars lined up on the grid per FIA race procedure. As Charlie Whiting signalled the green light to start the formation lap, a full field of twenty cars set off as normal for a single lap before forming the starting grid.

At the banked Turn 13, the entrance to the pit lane and the turn that was the centre of the controversy , all teams that ran Michelin tyres returned to their pits, leaving just six cars from the three Bridgestone teams Ferrari , Jordan , and Minardi to start the race.

The move by the teams, to come to the grid and then pull out after the formation lap into the pits, infuriated the fans, who did not know about the plan.

The race was a story of pit strategy, as the only passing on the circuit was of lapped traffic. Albers was the only car to run a three pit stop race, as all other drivers chose to stop only twice.

The only lead changes came on lap 26, as Schumacher's second stop gave Barrichello the lead, and on lap 51, as Schumacher turned in the quickest pit stop at After this incident, which was not investigated by race officials, both Ferrari drivers were reminded over their radios not to crash out of the race, and they both settled into a slower pace, comfortably ahead of the rest of the field.

Monteiro and Karthikeyan, more than a lap down, finished in a distant third and fourth, and Albers and Friesacher brought up the rear, two laps down.

At the podium ceremony, at which none of the scheduled dignitaries were present, all Ferrari team members quietly accepted their awards, and quickly exited.

However, Monteiro stayed behind to celebrate his first podium finish, and the first for a Portuguese driver. The win, Schumacher's only victory of , moved him from fifth to third in the drivers championship.

Bernie Ecclestone, in answer to a question by ITV 's Martin Brundle in an interview just before the start of the race, described the future of Formula One in the United States and the future of Michelin in the sport as "not good".

He also said that the "incident's not the fault of the teams, to be honest with you. The race was labelled a farce, and David Coulthard said, "It throws into doubt the future of the race in US".

He furthermore called for Mosley's resignation. The following day, the FIA published a justification of its refusal to permit a change in tyres or the installation of a chicane.

It contended that Formula One operated under "clear rules" which could not be altered when a team "brings the wrong equipment to a race. The FIA also summoned the seven Michelin-shod teams before the World Motorsport Council at their headquarters in France, for a hearing on June 29, to explain their failure to participate, by which they had presumably violated the terms of the Concorde Agreement.

He reiterated that the reason for not installing the chicane was purely that it had never been tested and was thereby deemed unsafe.

He pointed out that the alternatives that the FIA suggested were feasible, and wondered why the teams did not use the pitlane as an alternative, especially when, with only six Bridgestone cars, the Michelin teams could still compete for the points scoring seventh and eighth places.

On June 29 the FIA World Motorsport Council found the teams guilty on the first two counts, that is, of not being in possession of suitable tyres for the event, but with strong mitigating circumstances , and that of wrongfully refusing to allow their cars to start the race.

The teams were found not guilty of the other three counts. The punishment, however, was not decided, and was not to have been announced until September The decision was due to "evidence previously submitted to the FIA Senate.

They contended that had they competed, they potentially faced criminal charges for knowingly putting others at risk even if no accident actually occurred.

On June 28, Michelin announced that it would offer compensation to all race fans who had purchased tickets for the Grand Prix. Additionally, Michelin purchased 20, tickets for the United States Grand Prix to be distributed to spectators who attended the race.

In addition to the refunded tickets, there was some discussion about holding a second, non-championship race at Indianapolis. On July 2, at the French Grand Prix , McLaren team principal Ron Dennis suggested that an additional race could be held at the American circuit after the last official race of the season, in Shanghai.

Modern Formula One cars are mid-engined , hybrid, open cockpit, open wheel single-seaters. The chassis is made largely of carbon-fibre composites , rendering it light but extremely stiff and strong.

If the construction of the car is lighter than the minimum, it can be ballasted up to add the necessary weight.

The race teams take advantage of this by placing this ballast at the extreme bottom of the chassis, thereby locating the centre of gravity as low as possible in order to improve handling and weight transfer.

The cornering speed of Formula One cars is largely determined by the aerodynamic downforce that they generate, which pushes the car down onto the track.

This is provided by "wings" mounted at the front and rear of the vehicle, and by ground effect created by low air pressure under the flat bottom of the car.

The aerodynamic design of the cars is very heavily constrained to limit performance and the current generation of cars sport a large number of small winglets, "barge boards", and turning vanes designed to closely control the flow of the air over, under, and around the car.

The other major factor controlling the cornering speed of the cars is the design of the tyres. From to , the tyres in Formula One were not " slicks " tyres with no tread pattern as in most other circuit racing series.

Instead, each tyre had four large circumferential grooves on its surface designed to limit the cornering speed of the cars. Suspension is double wishbone or multilink front and rear, with pushrod operated springs and dampers on the chassis — one exception being that of the specification Red Bull Racing car RB5 which used pullrod suspension at the rear, the first car to do so since the Minardi PS01 in Ferrari used a pullrod suspension at both the front and rear in their car.

Carbon-carbon disc brakes are used for reduced weight and increased frictional performance. These provide a very high level of braking performance and are usually the element which provokes the greatest reaction from drivers new to the formula.

Formula One cars must have four uncovered wheels, all made of the same metallic material, which must be one of two magnesium alloys specified by the FIA.

Starting with the Formula 1 season, the engines have changed from a 2. In addition they include a lot of energy recovery technology.

Engines run on unleaded fuel closely resembling publicly available petrol. A wide variety of technologies—including active suspension [98] and ground effect aerodynamics [99] —are banned under the current regulations.

If more engines are used, he drops ten places on the starting grid of the event at which an additional engine is used.

Proposals to hold future races are regularly made by both new locations and countries and circuits that have previously hosted a Formula One Grand Prix.

Following their purchase of the commercial rights to the sport in , Liberty Media announced their vision for the future of Formula One at the Bahrain Grand Prix.

The proposal identified five key areas, including streamlining the governance of the sport, emphasising cost-effectiveness, maintaining the sport's relevance to road cars and encouraging new manufacturers to enter the championship whilst enabling them to be competitive.

Formula One can be seen live or tape delayed in almost every country and territory around the world and attracts one of the largest global television audiences.

During the early s, Formula One Group created a number of trademarks, an official logo, and an official website for the sport in an attempt to give it a corporate identity.

Ecclestone experimented with a digital television package known colloquially as Bernievision which was launched at the German Grand Prix in co-operation with German digital television service "DF1", 30 years after the first GP colour TV broadcast, the German Grand Prix.

It was introduced in many countries over the years, but was shut down after the season for financial reasons. The only station that originally differed from this was "Premiere"—a German channel which offers all sessions live and interactive, with features such as the onboard channel.

This service was more widely available around Europe until the end of , when the cost of a whole different feed for the digital interactive services was thought too much.

Prices were too high for viewers, considering they could watch both the qualifying and the races themselves free on ITV. However, upon the commencement of its coverage for the season, the BBC reintroduced complementary features such as the "red button" in-car camera angles, multiple soundtracks broadcast commentary, CBBC commentary for children, or ambient sound only and a rolling highlights package.

Different combinations of these features are available across the various digital platforms Freeview , Freesat , Sky , Virgin Media cable and the BBC F1 web site prior to, during, and after the race weekend.

Not all services are available across all the various platforms due to technical constraints. The BBC also broadcasts a post-race programme called "F1 Forum" on the digital terrestrial platforms' "red button" interactive services.

An announcement was made on 12 January , on the official Formula 1 website Formula1. Sky Sports F1 covered all races live without commercial interruption as well as live practice and qualifying sessions, along with F1 programming, including interviews, archive action and magazine shows.

BBC ended their joint television contract after the season, transferring their rights to Channel 4 until the end of the season, with their coverage being presented by former T4 presenter Steve Jones.

Formula One Management's in-house production team produces race edits synchronised to music. Currently the terms "Formula One race" and "World Championship race" are effectively synonymous; since , every Formula One race has counted towards the World Championship, and every World Championship race has been to Formula One regulations.

But the two terms are not interchangeable. The distinction is most relevant when considering career summaries and "all time lists".

For example, in the List of Formula One drivers , Clemente Biondetti is shown with 1 race against his name. Biondetti actually competed in four Formula One races in , [] but only one of these counted for the World Championship.

Similarly, several Indianapolis winners technically won their first World Championship race, though most record books choose to ignore this and instead only record regular participants.
